Jon Cape's ... H.P. Lovecraft's, "From Beyond"

It's taken Jon Cape some time to get his full-length video of H.P. Lovecraft's, "From Beyond" online, but now, as YouTube have changed their allowances on size and length, the video has finally been uploaded and is ready for your viewing pleasure. Using my reading of the story from Sometimes 13, J.C. has lavishly illustrated H.P.'s tale, bringing to life not just the main protagonists, but also the weird machine, and the even weirder beasties that come through it, From Beyond

Once you're done, it would be great if you could the video a thumbs up on YouTube and share to your Facebook etc. And if you enjoy it, you'll be delighted to hear that Jon is currently at work on another of my readings of H.P.L's stories - DAGON!

The Machine Stops. Part One

A few months ago, M.J. Hahn, of the Bellefaire Podcast, asked me if I'd like to play the part of Kuno in an adaptation of E.M. Forster's "The Machine Stops". I gladly agreed, even though I'd never read the story before. It was a tricky part, Kuno's story is a strange one to say the least, and it was made all the more tricky because I wasn't recording it with the other voice actors involved; we all recorded our bits in isolation and sent them over to MJ for him to edit into the whole thing. Anyway, today he dropped me a line to say the first episode is now live!

The result is a thoroughly cracking piece of audio drama, extremely well-edited and put together by M.J., with great atmospheric sound effects that remind me of vintage sci-fi dramas from the 1940s. Hats off also to M.J. as narrator, and the other voice actors, Sally Clawson and Tristy Taylor.

Download the podcast from M.J.'s site, or iTunes.

Planet U&F

Yes, it's Planet U&F time again, Listeners. Send in those audio files and I'll put you on the Underwood and Flinch podcast. Watch this video for details, and thanks to Jon Cape for the highly cool opening sequence.

7th Annual Podcast Awards

The 7th Annual Podcast Awards just sent me an email saying they exist and would I like to get my audience to vote for me. Well, sure, that sounds like a good idea. However, they don't have a podcast novel category, so I suggest the categories to vote for U&F would be:

"Best Produced" Underwood and Flinch (podcast URL: http://mikebennett.libsyn.com)

"Entertainment" Underwood and Flinch (podcast URL: http://mikebennett.libsyn.com)

Don't be tempted (as I was) to nominate U&F in lots of categories because you're just spoiling your ballot sheet. I should have read the instructions first: Do not nominate the "same show" for People's Choice and Best Produced, nominate 2 different shows in the top two categories. You can then nominate each show in one additional category each.

So by hitting the categories I suggest above, we vote tactically and so stand a better chance of winning something Smile

If U&F wins something here, or even comes close, it could mean a sponsorship deal for U&F (which means I get a bit of money) and a lot more listeners. Wunderbar!!

To get the ballot sheet, click here. You only get one chance, so read the instructions carefully, then VOTE U&F! I thank you.

The New Fiction Writers Podcast

Now finished text editing on 37

One week later. The text has now reached a finished version. I thought I was close last week, but it was still ragged around the edges. I worked on it through the week and sat down for a day-long top-to-bottom read and re-edit yesterday (amazing how little things on page six don't tie-up with little things on page two, but this is what happens when you have to chip away at it over a period of time). It now flows smoothly, and reads well. Naturally it could always be improved upon, but to do so would be to delay further. Recording will start ASAP. I can't record it right now because I have to go to work, so I'll either do so tonight when I get home, or tomorrow when I get up. As always, I thank you for your patience :-)

U&F 37 Delays

Hello Listeners,

I know a lot of you are checking in on this site and U&F.com daily to see if there's any word of Episode 37, so I thought I'd best let you know why it's taking so long. Basically, I have to work at my day job, and that means I have very little time for writing. Here's a picture taken of me and a recent class ...

class

That's me in front.

I work on the episode (text - yes, I'm still only on the text) for about 45 minutes in the mornings, but then I have to begin to prepare for my classes. I teach till 6, then I get the train home. By the time my wife and I have cooked and eaten dinner, the day's gone. I get to work on it for hours at the weekend, but it's a very big chapter - almost 20 pages - and so it's taking a lot of editing. Once the editing is done, I'll record it and get it online. It'll either be one big episode (probably movie-length) or two episodes of about 40-45 mins each.

I had hoped that sales of my eBook, Hall of Mirrors Vol.1, would be enough to make it possible for me to leave paid employment and work full time as a writer. However, so far only 1% of the U&F audience have bought the book, so I'm not able to retire from the day job just yet. I've also had to put the price of the book up to $2.99 - I figure if people aren't going to buy it for a buck, they aren't going to buy it for $2.99 either - and I read that $2.99 is a good price to set your book as it because sometimes if a book is too cheap, new readers will think it's probably crap and ignore it. But hey, it works out a dollar / pound / euro a story, so it's still a fair price.

Needless to say, U&F 37 is coming and will be with you as soon as possible. Don't check in every day though, it won't be anytime this week. Check back in 7 days, hopefully by then I'll have better news.

One day I'll be able to make money at this game, but until then - as always - I thank you for your patience.

Sometimes Video Bit 1

About a year ago, Jon Cape asked me to shoot a bit of video of myself reading Lovecraft's "From Beyond" so he could possibly add it to the animated film he was making of the story. I'm not sure if the clip was ever used in the finished video because to date, the video is still unpublished. Here in the meantime is the bit of me doing the reading in full mad scientist mode. It features an exciting flub moment. 'Exciting', of course, is the wrong word, but it's always good for coaxing people to check stuff out :-)

Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Twitter

I've been meaning to get more active on Twitter for years, but for a long time I thought it was a bit daft. I mean, "I'm at the shops" for example. Who cares? But the other day I went over to the site and saw that there were about 600 people following me, so I thought I ought to say something other than "Episode *blah* is now live". I did a few tweets, and people tweeted back to me. So I did a few more, and the same thing happened. Well, long story short, I've decided to do a tweet a day. If that means I write "I'm at the shops" then so be it, but I'll try and make it a bit more interesting if I can.
