Act III Begins. U&F 36 Arrives.

And so, we moved house from Ireland to England. We got all our stuff shipped over from two moves (one from Ireland and another from the sale of the Spanish house) and then realised we had too much. We got rid of tons of it, and then had room for some furniture. We bought furniture and filled it with the remaining stuff and / or sat on it.

My wife got a job.

I made an office space to write in and started writing. I got a job. BT finally connected our internet service. I edited what I'd been writing. I recorded it at the weekend. I edited the audio on Monday, and hey presto - here's U&F 36! Smile

With Underwood's origin tale told, we return to the present day and some of the other characters in the story. At La Reina de Corazones, Keith has problems explaining himself to Melanie, while in Malaga, Lydia has an appointment to see an old friend.

What Makes a Good Zombie Apocalypse Story?

With the amount of zombie movies, fiction and computer games now almost at horde proportions in itself, I'm wondering what you think makes a good zombie apocalypse story. Which stories are your favourites? Which do you dislike? Is there something that you feel makes one zombie story better than another? What makes one tale rise to the top of the stinking, oozing mass and what causes others to rot quietly at the bottom?

z

For me, Romero's original trilogy is the benchmark of Undead excellence. Dawn of the Dead was the first "X" film I ever saw in the cinema. I was fifteen and I stuffed newspaper into my boots to give me a little extra height so the box office person might more likely accept that I was 18. Fortunately she was either blind or she didn't care; I got in, and it scared the crap out of me. Afterwards I began wondering (fearfully) what I would do if a zombie apocalypse started in my neighbourhood. Where would I go? What would I do? etc. Obviously I wasn't alone in wondering that, as there are now thousands of stories that have come from others who must have wondered too.

I don't know about you, but when I watch these movies, I'm often muttering to myself "that wouldn't happen" or "ooooh, good twist" etc. Actually I do that with all movies, but I do it more so with horror movies (and Doctor Who, but I'm usually just muttering negatives there because like most of my generation, I think I should be in charge of that show). But what makes you mutter: "that wouldn't happen" or "oooh, good twist" and so on?

Why?

Am I going to write my zombie apocalypse any time soon? I don't know, maybe. On the one hand, it'd be fun, but on the other, you could say it's a bit like flogging a dead (or undead) horse: as a genre, it's pretty much completely tapped and is now repeating itself ad-nauseum - and yet there's the thing: it does so to the delight of countless millions including myself. We don't mind, indeed, we enjoy seeing the same story again again, as long as it's suitably different and has more of the elements we enjoy and less of those we don't.

So tell me, Listener, what are those grisly undead elements for you?

Latest Artwork from Paul Warren

Paul Warren has busy with his paintbrushes over the course of Underwood's origin adventure. The picture below is called "John William Brooks is Dying" and is one of three pictures recently completed by Paul that are viewable in the Listeners' Artwork Gallery. Lovely job, Paul Smile

Underwood and Flinch: Episode 34

Episode 34 has arrived. I didn't want to say anything earlier because I've had so many problems getting it up (arf!). Even now, the click-pic link below may not work yet (it doesn't for me, but that could be my connection, which has been terrible lately). Anyway, it IS in my iTunes inbox, so it should be in yours Smile

Episode 34: Lord Underwood continues the story of his origins. A nightmarish creature has snatched Cullen, DeMatos and Dodd away to their deaths. Can Underwood, Matthias and Rudge work together in order to escape the island before the sun goes down? Or will it be every man for himself against the devil?

Polidori Awards Podcast

Hey, remember that Polidori Awards vote a while back? Well the results are in, and I'm delighted to say that thanks to you - the good listeners of U&F that went to vote - this was the result in the Best Vampire Podcast category ...

pd

Dan Shaurette, the man behind the awards, has produced a special Polidori Awards edition of his 'Out of The Coffin' podcast, where I and the other winners offer our acceptance speeches. You'll be glad to know that I avoided breaking down into blubbing thanks to my mother and father, my dog, my cat, the man next door who used to show me his stamp collection, everyone in Trumpton, the person who invented crumpets, gin, etc etc, and kept it down to the people who matter - you folks who voted Smile

I thank you, *sobs*, I thank you all, and I'd just quickly like to say, *blubs*, thanks to the people of Trumpton; Eggbert, my goldfish; the person who invented corduroy ... *fade out to sounds of yawning*

Listen to the Polidori Awards show here, and while you're there, why not subscribe to Out of The Coffin? It's the ideal podcast for all things VAMP.

Sometimes 16: The Lull by Saki, and Hall of Mirrors on Kindle

Mike Bennet Podcast.com is like a bus stop; nothing happens for ages, then two or three posts come along all at once.

To support the release of Hall of Mirrors on Kindle, I've posted a special episode of Sometimes. Sometimes 16 features not only everything you need to know about the Hall of Mirrors series' publication, but also a story from Saki (one of my favourites 'The Lull') music from The Audreys, and even an exciting (?) listener phone-in. Get your ears on!

Hall of Mirrors Begins on Amazon Kindle

After much, much ... much work and secret struggle (I couldn't say anything until it was done), the Hall of Mirrors stories are finally coming to publication. They're materialising into the Amazon Kindle store in four volumes. The first contains the stories, Hair and Skin, The Grave, and The Haslet Technique, and is available now from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk for the bargain prices of $0.99 and £0.71p respectively (the difference is due to the exchange rate; your wallet will be exactly the same amount lighter on both sides of the Atlantic).

HoM1

This is the first time in five years of podcasting that I've been able to make any of my work available to buy, so I really hope you will avail of this great opportunity to show some support to the cause (or help me pay my rent, call it what you will ;-)

Interestingly, you don't have to have a Kindle to get the book. You can get free apps for the iPhone, the iPod touch, The iPad, the iMac, PC, Windows Phone 7, and Android phone FREE from the Amazon Kindle store here: GIMME FREE KINDLE APP

So please, listeners, if you have any of the above devices, go to the Amazon Kindle store and grab your copy of Hall of Mirrors Volume One today!

Oh, and if you could see your way clear to writing a few kind words in the review section, I'd be doubly grateful.

Many thanks. Happy reading :-)
