Mike Bennet Podcast.com is like a bus stop; nothing happens for ages, then two or three posts come along all at once.
To support the release of Hall of Mirrors on Kindle, I've posted a special episode of Sometimes. Sometimes 16 features not only everything you need to know about the Hall of Mirrors series' publication, but also a story from Saki (one of my favourites 'The Lull') music from The Audreys, and even an exciting (?) listener phone-in. Get your ears on!

Sometimes - Episode 15
Merry Christmas, Listeners!
Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, let me send you my best wishes for the holiday season in the shape of the Sometimes 15 Christmas Special. Featuring music from X, The Elves of Heaven, and John Serrie (download links below); also "Quiztimes" the exciting (er?) new Sometimes quiz that - especially for this holiday edition - pits characters from my podcast novels past and present against each other to see who knows the most about Christmas, or "Crimbo" as we call it on this side of the pond (and no, that's not in the questions).

There's also a story from Saki, "Bertie's Christmas Eve", and an unusual reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" - though I won't say more about that here as it will spoil the surprise of the unusual.

All in all, it's a big fat 45 minute bundle of festive nonsense that I'm sending to you all in place of the Christmas cards I can't send you because I don't have your addresses and I couldn't afford the stamps. Have a good one, listeners, and I look forward to filling your ears with more podcast delights in 2011.
... Oh, and comment for Pete's sake. What, am I talking to myself here??

Sometimes - Episode 14. Halloween Special. Man-Size in Marble
Happy Halloween, Listeners!! A gigantic, 90 minute edition of Sometimes featuring my reading of E. Nesbit's, Man-Size in marble, is now live. The show also features Music from A Band Called Quinn, your Listener's Q&A with my wife asking your questions, a trip to the kitchen to see "What's in my Fridge?", plus various outbreaks of random Halloween weirdness.

Sometimes - Episode 13. H.P. Lovecraft's 'From Beyond'
Hello Listeners
Sometimes 13 is now live. It's one of the most labour-intensive podcasts I've ever done (it took five days to make). It's also - I think - one of the best.
The featured story is HP Lovecraft's, 'From Beyond', one of my favourites among HPL's shorts, and one I've wanted to read for a long time - not just because it's among my favourites from Lovecraft, but because it also gives me the chance to go into maximum ham overdrive on the acting (which I do with gusto).
The cover art was specially produced by Jon Cape, who made the recent U&F video and a number of other groovy 3-D art renders which you can also find here in the galleries at MBP.com

Music comes from The Dandy Warhols and Lene Lovich (you can swipe a free download of Lene's MP3 'Birdsong' below), and also Ambient Light, who made the weird and wonderful music used on the recording of From Beyond.
This is the last Sometimes before the re-commencement of Underwood and Flinch, and perhaps the last one ever, because it takes so damn long to produce an episode. I always start out thinking that each one will be simple, basic and straightforward, but it always becomes more and more fiddly and complex as new ideas occur to me during production - and before I know it, a whole day has gone by, then another, then another. Seriously, it's an insanely complicated podcast to make, and the whole thing just slips by in sixty minutes without touching the sides. Mind you, even though Sometimes drives me (and my wife) mental, I enjoy every minute of making it ... though I'm not sure if she does ;-)
I hope you enjoy it - and if you do, please leave a few kind words at
iTunes, thankee kindly, guv'nor.

Sometimes - Episode 12. Sometimes 12: Gabriel-Ernest by Saki
Here's Sometimes 12, with its featured story, 'Gabriel-Ernest' by Saki. If you're a long-time Sometimes listener, you'll be familiar with Saki from Sometimes 1, 2, 5 and 6. As you might have guessed, he's one of my favourites, and it's always a pleasure for me to bring his brilliant tales to life.
The podcast also features a poem from me, music from A Band Called Quinn, and a trip to the fridge to check on the Squid Brand Fish Sauce.

Sometimes - Episode 11. Sometimes 11: H.P. Lovecraft's 'Dagon'
|
In a Lovecraft-themed ... ish edition of Sometimes. Mike reads H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror short story, Dagon. There's also a reading of Mike's own poem, Seeking the Unwanted, which is nothing to do with Lovecraft, but, er ... Anyway, music comes from old favourites, Fruitcake Superbeing and A Band Called Quinn. Click the picture to fish out the MP3

Sometimes - Episode 10. 'The Cannibalism in The Cars' by Mark Twain
Hello Listeners
It's that time of the month again - the time when something drops into your inbox from me. And this time it's me reading Mark Twain's story, 'The Cannibalism in The Cars'. It was, I don't mind telling you, a b****** of a task. It took innumerable takes and left about a million cuttings on the cutting room floor, but finally, it's done. I don't even know if it's any good or not at this stage - I listened through it this morning and I was almost speaking along with it - I know the words so well. Anyway, for better or worse, here it is. Bon apetit ...

Sometimes - Episode 9. Dec' 09
A special festive edition of Sometimes featuring the Q&A that didn't make it onto the end of U&F 21. In this searching interview, Mike answers listeners' questions on Underwood and Flinch, while dodging the deeper issues like politics, God and 'dryness'.
Guest starring Mike's wife and an old friend from an earlier 'Sometimes'.

I shall be away from my 'desk' for the next week as I'm off to England for Christmas. So before I go, I'd like to wish all you lovely listeners a very peaceful and happy festive season and all the very best for a great 2010. As always, thanks for listening and being the best audience in the world.
Cheers for now
Mike
Sometimes - Episode 8. 'The Human Chair'
Nothing to get too excited about, just a news bulletin, a song, a classic creepy story and of course, a glimpse into my fridge. It's just my way of saying, "Hello, I'm not dead." I hope you like it.
