Sometimes 20 - Spirit of Nationalism by Richard Marsden

Back again after a typical period of absence with a new podcast - SOMETIMES 20!

Now if you've been listening to me for years, you may recall that I read a story for Pseudopod back in 2010 called Spirit of Nationalism by Richard Marsden. However, I know that I've picked up a lot of new listeners since then, and so, since I've always liked the story and my reading of it, I thought I'd recycle it for Sometimes. I contacted Richard Marsden, and he gave his blessing, so here it is, gracing the audio pages of Sometimes 20!

Richard has another story on Pseudopod called Grave of Ships, and has a number of books and stories available from his website, including an ongoing sci-fi humour saga called The Traveling Tyrant.

Also in the podcast, there's the return of the One Among the Sleepless podcast, news about the Salvation and Other Stories 3 Day Giveaway from Amazon. For 3 days from 00.01 am Thursday 28th Feb to 11.59 Saturday 3rd March, this ebook will be available for free from Amazon stores around the world. All I ask in return is that you leave 5 stars and a few kind words. Many thanks.

There's also news on the ebook and print releases of Underwood and Flinch, and news about the sequel, Blood and Smoke. And, besides a trip to the fridge and a song from Lene Lovich, you'll also hear about the new German editions of Salvation (Erlösung) and Night Crossing (Nachtfahrt), as translated by Martje Salje. You can get those from my page at Smashwords.

So all in all, it's quite a bumper slice of podcastery, and I hope you enjoy it Smile

Man-Size in Marble by E. Nesbit - Restored and on YouTube

Back in October 2010, I released a huge special edition Sometimes podcast especially for Halloween. The featured story was E. Nesbit's classic spookster, Man-Size in Marble.

I also had the reading of Man-Size available on YouTube, but back when I uploaded it, YouTube was only taking videos of about 15 minutes in length, so it was broken up into three separate videos. This - as anyone who's ever tried to follow a segmented video on YouTube can testify - was a pain in the a*se. Part One got viewed a million times but the other parts barely got a look in.

However, today I'm happy to announce that as YouTube now permits much longer videos, I've restored and uploaded the full-length recording of Man-Size in Marble in all its creepy glory. You can get it here.

It's a bit early for Halloween, but it works just as well on any dark winter's night, and by gosh, we're certainly getting those lately (or at least we are in my part of the world) Smile

Sometimes Video Bit 1

About a year ago, Jon Cape asked me to shoot a bit of video of myself reading Lovecraft's "From Beyond" so he could possibly add it to the animated film he was making of the story. I'm not sure if the clip was ever used in the finished video because to date, the video is still unpublished. Here in the meantime is the bit of me doing the reading in full mad scientist mode. It features an exciting flub moment. 'Exciting', of course, is the wrong word, but it's always good for coaxing people to check stuff out :-)

Mwa-ha-ha-ha!

Sometimes

Sometimes: a magazine show from Mike Bennett featuring news and chit-chat, music, trips to the fridge, and Mike's readings of some great classic short stories by authors such as Saki and H.P. Lovecraft.

When is it available? Sometimes.

"Brilliant, brilliant Stuff! Mike Bennett has a unique style. Hilarious, bizarre, revolting, tender, violent all of these things and more." Nick Robinson (Listener)

Sometimes 15: Bertie's Christmas Eve by Saki, and The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

At the moment, the episode is going through final proof-listening, but should be up in a few hours.

Eleven Classic Short Stories

I've been meaning to do this for ages and I've finally done it; I've taken all my readings of classic short stories from 'Sometimes' and released them as a stand-alone podcast with the help of the good people at Podiobooks.com.

classics

It's interesting for me to listen to these again as I can hear the room I was in and the mic I was using when I recorded them. For example, 'The Cold Embrace' was recorded in a huge sitting room with an open kitchen attached (inc. the original fridge), and using the same mic I used for One Among the Sleepless, while 'Dagon' for example, was recorded in a small room with my current mic. I could go on about good and bad rooms and microphones all day, but I won't bore you. To cut a long story short, the podcaster who rents apartments and houses has to use whatever four walls come to hand, and some lodgings give rise to better podcast audio than others. There see, I'm already boring myself. I'll shut up.

The podcast is available here at Podiobooks

And here at iTunes.

Sometimes 12: Gabriel-Ernest by Saki

Here's Sometimes 12, with its featured story, 'Gabriel-Ernest' by Saki. If you're a long-time Sometimes listener, you'll be familiar with Saki from Sometimes 1, 2, 5 and 6. As you might have guessed, he's one of my favourites, and it's always a pleasure for me to bring his brilliant tales to life.

The podcast also features a poem from me, music from A Band Called Quinn, and a trip to the fridge to check on the Squid Brand Fish Sauce.

Sometimes 11: H.P. Lovecraft's Dagon

In a Lovecraft-themed ... ish edition of Sometimes. Mike reads H.P. Lovecraft's classic horror short story, Dagon. There's also a reading of Mike's own poem, Seeking the Unwanted, which is nothing to do with Lovecraft, but, er ... Anyway, music comes from old favourites, Fruitcake Superbeing and A Band Called Quinn.

Sometimes 11: Preview

Sometimes 11 should be online in the next few days. The featured story will be 'Dagon' by H.P. Lovecraft, and as you can see from the picture below, it's a fearful tale indeed. The artwork is by Jeff Remmer, and you can find more his fantastic Lovecraftian visions on his page at The Temple of Dagon.
